This year’s edition of EA Sports’ long-running NHL video game franchise is faster, more fluid, and a more challenging experience than ever before. From AI-controlled teammates who actually have chemistry to new physics-based goals and shoot-blocking goalies that don’t let pucks go through them like ghosts, everything about this year’s version has been given a complete overhaul.

Franchise Mode is the classic NHL career mode experience. You can start as your favourite team, or run an expansion draft and become the 33rd NHL club. Skate your way to the Stanley Cup whilst signing players, developing future talent and managing that all-important salary cap.

Ultimate Team also returns, this time with women’s players available in HUT, with mixed rosters with the men.

Easily the biggest highlight so far in NHL 23 has been the addition of Custom Leagues in Franchise Mode.

While last year's installment gave you the option of doing Franchise in a standard 32-team league or a 33-team league with a new Expansion Team, they've ramped it way up with Custom Leagues.

Another huge change to NHL 23 is the way hitting and boarding is handled. In NHL 19, hitting was not only poorly implemented, it was borderline broken. Players would get thrown down almost every time they hit another player, regardless of how hard the hit was.

NHL 23 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Standard editions of the game are predicted to cost £59.99 on last-gen consoles and £69.99 on next-gen consoles.

It’s a shame that NHL 22 was not available for PC gamers via Origin, and unfortunately, it looks like PC players won’t be getting their hands on the game this year either.
